Aims

Our curriculum aims to ensure that students:

  • Increase confidence so they can successfully and confidently tackle the day-to-day challenges of life;
  • Develop life skills
  • Enable students to form opinions, listen to others.

Through our curriculum we aim to ensure that students are prepared for life after school, living independently and become valued members of their local communities. Students learn to apply their knowledge and skills in a variety of contexts. The curriculum promotes creativity, an understanding of their local community. Students build their knowledge and skills through research, problem solving for real life issues, developing their oracy skills, and listening through group discussions. The curriculum has been designed to ensure that students build their knowledge and understanding of the world of work, money management and budgeting. Through the curriculum, students being to understand the wider world and the skills and knowledge they need as they progress towards adulthood and independent living.

When designing the curriculum, we have considered the individual needs of all our students. To ensure that students with SEND have the opportunity to develop the same knowledge and skills as their peers, we adopt a range of strategies within the classroom such as in class support from a teaching assistant, smaller group teaching, adaptive technology, and IT. Where necessary, the curriculum is adapted to ensure that students have secure knowledge and understanding before moving on.

Prior knowledge is assessed at the start of each unit. Formative assessment is a feature of most lessons so that any misconceptions and gaps can be addressed quickly. Verbal feedback is key to ensuring progress is made. Summative assessments take place at the end of each unit and moderated both internally and externally.
