We are committed to ensuring all our students have impartial careers advice so that they can make informed decisions about future study and employment when they leave school. We offer a comprehensive and engaging careers programme from Year 7 to Year 11. We encourage all our students to be aspirational and choose career routes which both suit their interests and strengths, yet also provide challenging further education or training to enable them to be the best versions of themselves.

We aim to offer talks by employers and regular exploration of careers related matters so that students in all key stages feel prepared to participate with confidence in the world of work.

All students have the opportunity to:

  • Attend taster sessions at local colleges
  • Attend taster sessions at a local Sixth Form.
  • Attend visits to Higher Education establishments

In Year 10 students can

  • Complete one week’s work experience
  • Attend a mock interview with local employers

Prior to work experience and the mock interviews, students prepare curriculum vitae, letters of application and are coached on how to prepare for interview.

In Year 11, all students have at least one individual interview with our Careers Lead, Ms Sally Ingham to ensure that they are supported in making informed decisions about their next steps, whether it be to study A’ Levels, vocational qualifications or an apprenticeship. Support is not limited, with students able to make appointments throughout the academic year. Furthermore, students are also contacted individually following results day in August to ensure they have the support they need.

Our students come from a wide catchment area from across 3 counties and in recent years have taken up places at one of 5 colleges: Kendal, Lancaster and Morecambe, Myerscough (Preston), Darlington and Askham Bryan (York), and have access to 8 school Sixth Forms: Kirkbie Kendal, Kirkby Stephen Grammar School, Lancaster Royal Grammar School, Lancaster Girl’s Grammar School, Sedbergh School, Queen Elizabeth (Kirkby Lonsdale), Queen Elizabeth (Darlington) and The Queen Katherine School (Kendal). Furthermore, a number of local businesses have provided apprenticeships for our students. Our close connections with local employers, many of whom were students, or are, or have been, parents of students at Settlebeck, enables us to assist students find suitable job placements.

Where students have additional needs, they have support from INSPIRA to facilitate a smooth transition. This support begins in Year 9.

If financial difficulties are a barrier to students pursuing particular further education or training, we do our best to help find the means to overcome this. There are various local funds which provide help with educational costs.

We are extremely proud of the fact that it is rare for a student from Settlebeck to find themselves not in education, employment or training (NEET) when they leave us.
