Purpose of study

A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all students to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for students to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

Aims

Our curriculum aims to ensure that all students:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy, active lives.

To be successful, students need to:

  • Understand the long-term benefits of physical activity and make informed decisions to improve their mental, emotional, and physical well-being.
  • Be able to use a range of strategies and tactics to overcome opponents in team and individual sports.
  • Take part in activities which present intellectual and physical challenges which require problem solving skills.
  • Be an effective team player.
  • Evaluate their performances compared to previous ones and demonstrate improvement across a range of physical activities to achieve their personal best

The curriculum focuses on the development of knowledge and skills in a range of sports. Students learn about tactics, strategies, coaching techniques, game rules, ethics in sport and risk awareness. As students progress through the curriculum, they build on the foundations from KS3. For example, in Year 7 football, students learn short distance passing unopposed and opposed, this progresses in Year 8 to learning long distance passing. In Year 9 the focus moves to decision making while passing the ball which progresses onto advanced passing as students progress.

Students are given the opportunity to experience both competitive sport and additional participation in sport by representing their House once a term. All students can engage in our extensive extra-curricular program that is led by PE staff and specialist coaches at lunchtimes and evenings. Individuals and teams represent our school at numerous events and fixtures throughout the academic year both at local and national level and those students with complex SEND participate in various events organised by Active Cumbria. Our Cambridge Sport students are utilised at primary school sports festivals throughout the year and as student’s progress into Year 11 they can opt to take the Sports Leaders Level 2 qualification. Extra-curricular sport at Settlebeck considers the schools context carefully for example, we focus on sports that offer longevity for our students such as football – Sedbergh Wanderers, running – Howgill Harriers and rugby – KLRFU.

The curriculum is designed to be enjoyable, but at the same time develop and stimulate the students physically, socially, emotionally, and cognitively.

When designing our curriculum, we have considered the individual needs of our students. To ensure that students with SEND have the opportunity to develop the same knowledge and skills as their peers, we adopt a range of strategies including variation of role e.g. coach, referee, adapted equipment and small groups.

Formative assessment is a feature of all lessons, with verbal feedback at its core. At KS4, in Cambridge Sport students are assessed through set assignments. Outcomes from assessments are used to inform the curriculum.
